The Code of Civil Procedure (CPC) has withstood the test of time and worked well to serve the system of civil justice in the country, Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said today.

The Law Commission has recommended amendments to the CPC which governs the resolution of civil disputes. The CPC has been amended on three occasions to meet the changing needs of the society, he told the Lok Sabha.

He said since the Law Commission's recommendations on amending CPC relate to the concurrent list of the Constitution, under which views of the state governments are obtained on the issue.

"On receipt of comments from the states, the proposal will be examined by the central government with a view to making further amendments to the CPC," Gowda said.

The Minister lamented that several states have not responded to the central government's initiative despite a number of reminders.
