Cold conditions abate in north India

Cold conditions abated further in north India today with temperatures rising in most parts of the region.

Winter continued its gradual retreat from Delhi as the minimum temperature in the national capital rose to 11.2 degrees Celsius from yesterday's 10.6 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature settled at 27.1 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average, as the city experienced a sunny day.

Humidity in the air oscillated between 44 and 95 per cent.

There was some relief from intense cold for residents of Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir today as the minimum temperatures rose above the freezing point.
 

Srinagar recorded a low of 0.6 degree Celsius, up by nearly a degree from minus 0.2 degree Celsius the previous night, a MeT Department spokesman said.

The night temperature in the city stayed above freezing point for the first time in the last six days, he said.

Qazigund recorded a low of zero degree Celsius, while it was 2.4 degrees Celsius in Kokernag and minus 1.7 degrees Celsius in Kupwara, the spokesman said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 2.2 degrees Celsius while Pahalgam's low settled at minus 4.2 degrees Celsius.

Leh in Ladakh region registered a low of minus 9.9 degrees Celsius while Kargil town, the coldest place in the state, recorded minus 14.8 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperatures continued to hover near the normal level at most places in Punjab and Haryana.

In Haryana, Ambala recorded a low of 9.9 degrees Celsius, while Narnaul and Bhiwani registered 8.6 and 10.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Hisar was the coldest place in the state with a low of 6.7 degrees Celsius, down three notches than normal level.

Chandigarh recorded a low of 11.7 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal, the Met department said.

In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a low of 8.4 degrees Celsius, while Patiala and Ludhiana registered 8.8 and 8.6 degrees Celsius respectively.

Winter season is phasing out in Rajasthan as mercury showed an upward trend bringing respite from cold conditions.

Churu and Sriganganagar recorded lows of 9.8 and 9.9 degrees Celsius, while Kota, Barmer, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Ajmer, and Jaipur recorded minimum temperatures in the range of 13-18 degrees Celsius, a MeT report said.

The days are getting warmer with the maximum temperature ranging between 28 and 33 degrees Celsius in north-west of Rajasthan.
