Coldest Jan 22 in five years after rains drench city

Intermittent showers drenched the national capital today causing a sudden dip in the day temperature, which settled at 13.2 degrees Celsius recording the coldest January 22 in the last five years.

The Safdarjung observatory which is considered the official figure for the city recorded 6.4 mm of rainfall.

Observatories in Lodhi Road, Ayanagar, the Ridge and Palam received 5.6 mm, 5.8 mm, 6.1 mm and 7.9 mm rainfall, respectively.

The maximum temperature in the city was recorded at 13.2 degrees Celsius which was eight notches below the season's average and 4.2 degrees less than yesterday's day temperature. It was also the coldest January 22 in the last five years.
 

In the morning, minimum temperature settled three notches above normal at 11 degrees Celsius even as foggy conditions continued to hit train operations.

The weatherman has predicted similar weather till tomorrow evening after which the sky is likely to get clear.

Asked about the weather conditions on Republic Day, the weatherman said that it would be partly cloudy sky but there is no possibility of rain.

Thirty-seven trains including several premier north-bound services like Rajdhani and Duranto were running late by several hours. However, flight operations at Delhi airport remained more or less unaffected.

The visibility was 600 metres are 8.30 AM which reduced to 500 metres at 11.30 AM and 2.30 PM but improved to 800 metres at 5.30 PM.

The humidity in air oscillated between 98 and 77 per cent during the day.

Asked about tomorrow's forecast, the weatherman said, "The skies will remain partly cloudy till tomorrow evening and very light rain or thundershowers could occur in some areas. There will be shallow fog in the morning. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to settle around 16 and 10 degrees Celsius, respectively.
