The Virudhunagar District Collector V.Rajaraman has ordered an investigation against "irresponsible officials of the Public Works department" for not properly maintaining the shutters of the Anaikuttam dam, a very important water body of the district, leading to entire water in the dam going waste.

According to officials, the collector has asked the Chief Engineer of the PWD to take stern action against officials responsible for not maintaining shutters of the dam.

Every year Rs.20 lakh is allocated for maintenance of the shutters of the Anaikuttam dam.

As the money had not been spent for the maintenance of the shutters they had got stuck leading to the water draining, said a official at the collectorate.

The collector, who saw the dam reaching full level day before yesterday, was shocked to see it empty when he visited the area after people of Peraiyur T.Kallupatti blocked traffic to protest non-maintenance of the shutters.

A farmer association president Mathivanan claimed the dam reached its full level of 24 feet two days back and the surplus water was being discharged. The workers could not close the shutters when rains stopped last night, and the entire water stored in the dam went waste.

The collector also asked the PWD to maintain the other tanks in good condition.

A 12-member team from Pollachi has come to repair the shutters.
