The dispute took place when college proctor Dr Awadesh Singh rebuked former student leader Vipin Shukla for entering the campus with a gunman yesterday, after which some students and teachers got involved in the argument.

Both the sides claimed of being mistreated by the other and were taken to the police station to ease tensions, DIG Amitabh Yash said.

Some local political leaders also reached in support of the students.

"Police officials had the situation in control by late evening. The complaints of both are being looked into," he said.

Yash added that he had information of the SP (City) being suspended by the state government late last night for allegedly handling the case improperly. However, he had not received an official order in this regard.

Meanwhile, teachers have threatened that the college would not be reopened until those accused of misbehaving with them are arrested and demanded the students body elections be cancelled.

Security was also tightened outside the college premises to avert any untoward incident.
