Islampur College principal Utathwa Bandyopadhyay was admitted to a government hospital last night at Islampur in North Dinajpur district where doctors referred him to a Kolkata hospital for better treatment, the sources said.

He was being taken from Islampur to Kolkata, about 500 km away, they said.

Led by Chhatra Parishad's North Dinajpur district secretary Ishanur Haq, the students gheraoed Bandyopadhyay from 1 PM to 7 PM yesterday, they said.

The students' organisation was demanding that about 500 students who had failed to get admitted would have to be accommodated, the sources said, adding the admission process was completed in the college a week ago.

The gherao was withdrawn after the principal assured them that he would discuss the issue with the authorities of the North Bengal University, to which the college is affiliated, the sources said.

Bandyopadhyay fell ill after going home and was admitted to Islampur Sub-divisional Hospital from where he is being taken to Kolkata, they said.

The incident occurred six months after D D Sarkar, principal of Raiganj College here in the district, resigned after being attacked inside the campus by alleged Trinamool Congress workers.
