A collegian drowned in a government-run swimming pool here on the day his entry pass to the facility was to expire, police said.

Likhit Bhaskar Mahajan (21), a resident of Wardha district studying at the local Jawaharlal Darda Engineering College, drowned yesterday at the Azad Maidan swimming pool run by the District Sports office, they added.

He apparently drowned due to exhaustion after several rounds of swimming and his friends, who were present at the time of the incident, rushed him to a hospital where he died while undergoing treatment, officials said.

His uncle, Ashok Krishnaji Mahajan, filed a complaint with the police alleging that the swimming pool did not have life-saving equipment or a trainer.

He told police that lack of regular cleaning of the pool had led to silt accumulating at its base.

A police official said that a case of accidental death had been registered and further investigations were underway.
