Ahead of a mini-ministerial meeting here in March, the commerce ministry today started a two day brainstorming session on World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Diversified group of participants from academia, research, civil societies and ministries are participating in the meeting.

"Feedback from participants: One academic remarked that someone should say to the developed countries that you make your agricultural subsidies zero and we will make our tariff zero," the department of commerce said in a series of tweets.

Another stakeholder stated that in the past 17 years, member nations of the Geneva-based multi-lateral body have achieved "little" except the trade facilitation agreement.

"Feedback from participants: Reciprocity in tariffs shouldnt mean that the 2 countries should agree on same tariff on a product," it added.

Key WTO trade ministries from both rich and developing economies will discuss challenges being faced by the multi-lateral organisation at a meeting being hosted by India here on March 20.

The meeting has been convened by India in the aftermath of failure of the trade talks at Buenos Aires last year on account of differences among the members of the World Trade Organisation.

India has invited ministers from the US, European Union, Australia, China, New Zealand and several African countries.
