A commercial building, housing 16 shops and a godown, was gutted in a major fire in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, Fire and Emergency Services officials said here today.
The fire in the building at Iqbal Market in main town, 90 km from here, broke out last night and was brought under control after several hours of fire-fighting operation, a spokesman of the department told PTI here.
16 shops including three medical establishments and a godown suffered partial to extensive damage in the blaze, he said.

A total of 12 fire tenders and engines were involved in fire fighting operation, the spokesman said, adding the loss was estimated to be around Rs 25 lakhs.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire, he added.
