CPI (M) Politburo member and party's former General Secretary Prakash Karat today lashed out at the Centre's demonetization initiative, saying it caused hardship in day-to-day transactions of common people and other sections of society.

Small vegetable vendors, tea stall owners and hoteliers were not able to receive the demonetized notes even as common people were unable to buy essentials, he said in his address at the three-day special conference of Tamil Nadu unit of the party that concluded here today.

Movement of goods, especially essential products, through lorry transport, has come to a 'standstill', he said.

Both the state and the central governments were pursuing neo-liberal economic policy, he alleged and said that his party will continue to protest against both the governments.

Party's state unit secretary G Ramakrishnan told reporters that all the districts in the state faced severe drought following 'failure of monsoon'.

He urged the state government to declare Tamil Nadu as drought affected.
