A woman who gave birth to quintuplets and brought her five children up in the face of financial constraints has been chosen for an award by a Kerala-based community outfit.

The 'Mathrushree' award, instituted by the Samastha Kerala Nair Samajam (SNS), will be presented on Saturday to 46-year- old R Ramadevi from Pothencode in Thiruvananthapuram at a function at nearby Pazhayannur. The award consists of Rs 11,111 and a citation.

Ramdevi had given birth to five children -- four girls and one boy -- on November 18, 1995.

She brought up the children and educated them with her modest salary as an employee at a co-operative bank. All the children are now pursing various graduate-level courses.

"Ramadevi's has been an inspiring example of a mother's determination and sense of sacrifice. That is why the women's wing of SNS has decided to honour her," said Prabhakaran Nair, Thrissur district president of SNS.
