Delhi Government today strictly told Engineers India Limited to complete the Rs 600-crore Connaught Place redevelopment project at the earliest and warned it of punitive action if it fails to do so.

The instruction was given to EIL by Chief Secretary D M Spolia during a visit to the project site.

Sources said government was totally unhappy with the contractor for "unexplained delays" in the project which as per original agreement was to be completed before the commencement of the Commonwealth Games in October 2010.

They said government was seriously considering slapping financial penalty on the contractor as it has missed series of deadlines in the last three years.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in a meeting yesterday had expressed her "displeasure" about the delays in completing the project and told EIL to complete the project as soon as possible.
