The issue of attacks on people from the Northeast, especially in the national capital, resonated in Lok Sabha today with a member asking the government to take urgent steps to tackle the menace.

Raising the matter during Zero Hour amid din on Telangana and other issues, Congress member Thokchom Meinya said people from the Northeast were feeling alienated in the national capital.

He said that in recent times there have been growing "inhuman attacks" on the people from the Northeast, including the recent death of a student from Arunachal Pradesh, rape of a minor girl from Manipur and stabbing of Manipuri youths.

Meinya, who is a member from Manipur, claimed that "racial profiling" of these citizens was being carried out in various parts of the country, including Delhi, and wanted urgent action to put an end to it.

Observing that such attacks were becoming "too much", he urged the Union Home Ministry to ponder over the matter seriously as it was "highly injurious to the unity and integrity of the country. Enough is enough."

He sought urgent intervention of the Ministry and evolving of a long-term strategy to tackle the problem.
