Hitting out at Trinamool Congress over its "failure" to ensure safety of women in West Bengal, BJP MP Savitri Thakur today said it was astonishing that the condition remained poor despite a woman leading the state.
Thakur, also a member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Empowerment of Women, said the situation was much better in BJP-ruled states than under the Mamata Banerjee-led regime.
"The manner in which women in West Bengal are tortured is shameful and the condition of those from SC and ST is very sad and frightening. What is more astonishing is that their condition is so bad even though the state has a woman chief minister," she said at a programme here.

"The condition of women in MP is far superior than here (Bengal). I think it is high time that Bengal too should have a BJP government, which will ensure development and justice to women," Thakur, an MP from Dhar in Madhya Pradesh, said.
She said MP has introduced mobile police stations across the state specially for women. The service can be availed 24x7 by dialling 100 and the police will reach within 10 minutes.
BJP women's wing had on February 3 kicked off a 10-day march from Kamduni in North 24 Parganas district to Kakdweep in South 24 Parganas to protest against alleged rising atrocities against women under the TMC regime.
The 124-km march began from Kamduni, where a 20-year-old girl was gangraped and murdered in 2013.
