A three-day conference to discuss research and studies on diabetes began today at the India Expo Centre here.

Doctors and researchers working extensively to find ways to control the chronic ailment will be among the over 5,000 delegates expected to attend the conference organised by Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI).

With over 340 million people living with diabetes, the disease remains one of the world's biggest health concerns.

Inaugurating the conference, International Diabetes Federation (IDF) president Michael Hirst emphasised that every diabetic needed care and the rising numbers of diabetics posed a challenge before the medical fraternity.

Head of Endocrinology and Medicine Department, University College of Medical Sciences and GTB Hospital, Delhi, Dr S V Madhu stressed on the need to promote more "research in the country and analyse our findings in the local context, rather than depending on western studies."

Dr Rajeev Chawla, organising secretary, RSSDI, presented his findings on the role of DPP4 Inhibitors in reversing oxidative stress that can benefit patients.

DPP-4 inhibitors are a class of oral hypo glycemics that reduce glucagon and blood glucose levels.
