Aimed at addressing all facets of Lymphoma (a type of blood cancer), the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center today began its 13th annual conference -- Biology to Therapy.
The two-day conference was inaugurated by Dr T Ramaswamy, Secretary, Science and Technology, Government of India in presence of Dr GK Rath, Professor & Head, Radiation Oncology, AIIMS.
"The conference is being held with an aim to raise awareness, initiate dialogue and share recent technology updates to combat Lymphoma," said Dr Anurag Mehta, Secretary- Organising Committee, RGCON 2014 and Director, Lab and Blood Bank Services, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Center.
125 cancer experts from India and abroad have come together to share their experiences and technological updates on Lymphoma.
"Some key topics that will be covered during sessions in the next two days are evolution of Lymphoma, classification and diagnosis, case studies of some interesting cases of low grade Lymphomas, Early Stage of Hodgkin Lymphoma: chemotherapy and radiotherapy, treatment of Hodgkin Lymphoma in Children, elderly and pregnant women, dietary and other issues," Dr Mehta said.
Dr Vineet Talwar, Senior Consultant Oncology, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre said thousands suffer from Lymphoma in India, and millions across the globe.
"According to the National Cancer Institute 69,740 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma were diagnosed in 2013 alone. Lymphoma is one the deadliest and perhaps the fastest spreading cancer in the world.
"Following good food safety practises is always important, but food safety is especially important while going through cancer treatment. Chemotherapy, radiation, blood or marrow transplantation or removal of the spleen can make people more susceptible to food borne illnesses.
"Finally developing a positive attitude is essential as cancer is a disease of mind, body and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor," he said.
