Seeking to embarrass the government, a Congress activist has sent a "caution" notice to it for its "failure" to fulfil the promise of depositing Rs 15 lakh in the bank accounts of every Indian citizen.

Tehseen Poonawalla recently wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi reminding him of his pre-poll promise of bringing back black money stashed abroad and depositing Rs 15 lakh in every Indian's bank account.

He had sent a legal notice to the PMO on the issue which has now informed him that the matter has been referred to the Department of Revenue in the Finance Ministry for "action as appropriate".

Poonawalla had said that he would be approaching the Election Commission and the Supreme Court on the issue as it was a violation of an electoral promise made by Modi in the run up to the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
