Official reports said shops, banks, district court, post-offices were closed and Congress activists demonstrated before the collectorate.
The shutdown was called demanding arrest of those involved in the 'murder' of party worker Bapi Ghosh, whose body was recovered from Ganga in Rezinagar area, 40 km from the district headquarters town, yesterday.
Ghosh was missing since Monday after he went to the local hospital for some work.
Terming it a pre-planned murder aimed at disturbing law and order, Congress leadership alleged party workers were being killed despite Trinamool in power and threatened serious movement in Murshidabad if the culprits behind Bapi's killing were not booked.
