BJP today termed as "unfortunate and bizarre" the Congress charge that it is behind reports that Priyanka Gandhi will campaign across the country and wondered if these were doing the rounds as Rahul has "flopped" as a leader.

"Congress leader Ajay Maken has said that the media and BJP have conspired together to divert attention from the Datia incident. Priyanka Gandhi will campaign or not is an internal issue of the Congress. But Rahul has failed as a leader," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

The main Opposition termed the Congress' allegation against it as "really unfortunate and bizarre".

"Why will we do this? We know for certain that Rahul Gandhi has flopped," Javadekar said, adding that it is for the Congress to find out who leaked this news to the media.

The party also suggested that the source could be somebody from the Congress itself.

"It is their own problem," Javadekar said.

Maken, who heads the Congress Media Department, had earlier dismissed reports that Priyanka will campaign across the country and not be confined to Amethi and Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha elections. He alleged that it is being done to divert attention from the stampede incident in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh.

"Over 100 people have died in the tragedy. The whole country is looking at the Madhya Pradesh government which could not even provide police arrangement at the place. Priyanka is campaigning only in Amethi and Raebareli.

"I deny those reports absolutely. It (news about Priyanka Gandhi) is an attempt by some people to divert attention from the issue and to hide MP Government's failure," he told reporters.
