Congress today expressed concern over the growing influence of China in Nepal through increased FDI investments there and urged the government to be "more alert" than complacent on the development.

Drawing the attention on the issue, AICC spokesperson Gaurav Gogoi said Nepal is long and historic friend of India, which should deal with the matter cautiously.

"We should be utmost cautious when in our neighbourhood China is using its economic might because every foreign policy is shaped to guide country's economic self-interest.

"So, when China is investing heavily in Nepal which is guided by China's own economic, political and strategic interest. We urge the government to be more alert than complacent," he told reporters.

The Congress concern came in the wake of reports that China accounts for 68 per cent of total FDI coming into Nepal ever since change of government in the neighbouring country.

China's influence in Nepal's economy continues to grow with reports of Beijing topping the list of nations who pledged maximum FDI into the Himalayan nation.

As per figures provided by Nepal, China accounted for as much as 68 per cent of all FDI in Nepal in the current fiscal.
