The issue was raised in the assembly by Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh who drew the attention of Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat towards the allegation made by Majhi's 70-year-old mother Gorimani Majhi.

Gorimani in a statement held present BJD MLA from Umerkote Subas Gond, who was elected in the bye-election held after the killing, responsible for killing of her son. "Subas hatched a conspiracy to kill my son in order to become MLA of Umerkote," she told reporters.

Though she was yet to lodge a written complaint with the police, she had lodged an oral one at Umerkote police station stating that she was unable to write due to illiteracy.

Majhi was the MLA from Umerkote when he was shot dead on September 24, 2011 while distributing land record among tribals. The crime branch of Police probing the murder has so far released two sketches.

Refuting the allegation, Gond in a statement at the assembly said his close relationship with Majhi was known to the people of Umerkote. "We were close friends. The allegation against me has hurt me and all the tribal members."

However, outside the assembly Gond claimed that Majhi's family made the allegation against him after he refused to pay Rs 6 lakh demanded by them.

"Late Majhi's brother Dambaru was interested to get BJD ticket in the bye-election. As I was selected as the BJD candidate and won the elections, he demanded money from me," he told reporters outside the house.
