The alliance between DMK and Congress was continuing and the latter has decided to contest the local body polls on its own only for posts not fought on party symbols, TNCC President S Thirunavukarasar said today.
Addressing a southern region party meeting here, his first after taking over as TNCC chief, he said Congress had decided to go it alone in Panchayat level polls where candidates do not contest on party symbols.
"The Congress is still in alliance with DMK," he added.
Thirunavukarasar appealed to the party men holding party posts at Taluk levels for the past 25 years or more to give way to young people.
He alleged that the AIADMK government in the state was in a state of "deep slumber" in view of hospitalisation of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
On the demonetisation issue, he said the day-to-day life of citizens had been affected by the scrapping of the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.
Congress would support any move taken to eradicate black money but it will protest against the harassment of the common people in the guise of unearthing black money, he added.
Congress functionaries and cadres from southern districts of Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar districts attended the meeting, held to strengthen the party and discuss about the local body polls, expected to be held next month.
