The Congress government in Assam has betrayed its people, Union Youth and Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said.

"There is uncertainty everywhere. There is no security, no economic progress. People are directionless. People of the state believe that when BJP will come to power in 2016, their problems will be solved," he said.

BJP's Assam unit president Siddhartha Bhattacharya said Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is working for the benefit of the Congress by trying to include name of Bangladeshi immigrants in the National Register of Citizens, which is being updated.

"Tarun Gogoi's recent statement clearly says that he is working for the party by sacrificing the interest of the state. This will spoil the future of Assam and we oppose this," he told reporters here.

On Tuesday, Assam government had decided to write to the Centre to take steps for inclusion of all persons whose names appeared on electoral rolls by virtue of them 'being Indians' in the ongoing updation of NRC.

"There is no need for apprehensions among people belonging to tea tribes, scheduled tribes, minorities and other ethnic communities as the government will take all steps to ensure that their names are included in the NRC," Gogoi had said.
