Congress MP K C Venugopal today said the Centre's alleged attempt to rename youth clubs affiliated to Nehru Yuva Kendra as Vivekananda Clubs was aimed at "communalising" them.

The former Minister of State for civil aviation also said the move is a "humiliation" to legacy of Vivekananda's vision.

"The decision of Central government to rechristen the name of youth clubs affiliated to Nehru Yuva Kendra, aimed at taking control and communalise these prestigious institutions, is a humiliation to the legacy of Vivekananda's vision," he said in a statement.

"It is highly condemnable to communalise and saffronise the youth clubs which have always been central to foster a secular and modern society in the country," Venugopal said.

It is also reported that those clubs which aren't ready to rechristen themselves will lose grants and funds from Nehru Yuva Kendra, which is highly condemnable, Venugopal added.

He has also forwarded a letter to Central Youth Affairs Minister condemning the alleged move.
