The Congress' Punjab unit will seek the Centre's intervention for a fair and foolproof investigation into the recent massive drug haul in the state.

Congress MLAs, led by leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Sunil Jakhar, will meet Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde urging him to ensure that real culprits do not escape police net using political influence, according to a statement issued here.

Police had recently busted a synthetic drug racket and arrested mastermind Jagdish Bhola and his associates, major supplier Jagjit Singh Chahal and Maninder Singh Aulakh and seized over 600 kg of precursor chemicals worth Rs 600 crore in the international market.

Jakhar said the recovery of huge quantity of synthetic drugs by the police has also vindicated "the words of caution and concern" of Rahul Gandhi who had raised drug issue during his Punjab tour last month.

"It is really unfortunate that the Akali-BJP government had tried to mislead the people of the state by passing the buck to central agencies. But now that large haul of drugs and revelations have happened in their own backyard, it is time to own up responsibility," Jakhar said.

"You cannot pass the buck of synthetic drug menace to porous borders, when Punjab itself has become a generating spot," he said, and asked how it was possible that such a large organised syndicate ran without political protection and without the knowledge of law-enforcing agencies.
