A delegation of Congress leaders met Madhya Pradesh Governor Ramnaresh Yadav and urged him to allot land for the "much-delayed" project of setting up Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus here.

"We met Governor Yadav yesterday and handed over a memorandum to him and drew his attention towards the delay on the part of state government to allot land to the AMU campus here," former spokesperson of Minority Cell of MP Congress, Syed Saud Hasan, told PTI.

He said the UPA government had earlier decided to set up AMU campuses in five states after Sachar Committee report pointed out educational backwardness besetting Muslims.

"But now, MP is the only state, where the government is yet to allot land for the AMU campus. Land has been made available to set up campuses in Bihar, Maharashtra, Kerala and West Bengal. In two states, the educational activities have already begun," he added.

"AMU campus will benefit students of all communities. It is not for Muslims alone...Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan claims that he does not discriminate. But then why is he not letting AMU campus be established here," he asked.

According to Hasan, the Governor has promised to look into the matter.
