Congress MLA T N Pratapan today filed a petition in the Kerala High Court seeking to implead himself as additional respondent in the writ appeals seeking renewal of licenses of 418 closed bars.

He sought a direction to the government to refrain from renewing the license of the 418 bars.

Along with the petition, the MLA produced an article by Mahatma Gandhi which appeared in 'Harijan' daily on July 31, 1937, in which the Father of the Nation had stated that 'it was criminal to spend the income from the sale of intoxicants on the education of Nation's children or other public service. The government must overcome the temptation of using such revenue for nation building purpose'.

The petition has been posted to Aug 26.

Meanwhile, in another proceedings, state informed the High Court that physical inspection shall be conducted to examine the standard of toddy shops in the state.

This assurance was given before the division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice A M Shaffique on an appeal by Shabu of Palakkad complaining of unhygienic toddy shops in the state.
