Banks should be kept open round the clock for the next few weeks to tackle the situation caused by the demonetisation of Rs 500 and 1,000 notes that has put people in great difficulty, a Congress MP demanded today.

Husain Dalwai told PTI that people have been put to much difficulty while seeking replacement of old Rs 500 and 1,000 notes as banks opened today after demonetisation of such bills by the government on Tuesday.

The Rajya Sabha member from Maharashtra wanted that the Centre should even utilise the services of employees of LIC and other financial institutions in the gigantic task.

These employees should be roped in so that the banks across the country are manned round the clock for exchanging cash and deposit of old high denomination notes in order to handle heavy rush, he said.

Long queues were seen outside banks across the country and also at RBI counters today.
