Congress MP Pradip Bhattacharya today demanded an inquiry into the issue of Deshapriya Park Puja, where Kolkata Police has "permanently" stopped the entry of people due to massive rush.

"We demand an inquiry committee be set up to look into the Deshapriya Park incident. Both Kolkata Police and the Puja Committee are making fun of Durga Puja. This is unacceptable. There must be a proper inquiry into the incident to look into who was at fault," he said.

In view of the massive rush almost leading to a stampede- like situation on Sunday, Kolkata Police yesterday "permanently" stopped the entry of people inside Deshapriya Park in south Kolkata to view the tallest Durga idol, citing security and safety reasons.

Stressing that the decision to bar entry of people into Deshapriya Park was entirely because of security reasons, Kolkata Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purokayasta had said, "Safety and security of the people are our prime concern. We cannot compromise with that so we have taken such a step.

"We have permanently stopped entry of common people inside Deshapriya Park," Purokayasta had said.
