Congress in Kerala today asked the CPI-M-led LDF government to retract from its decision to release 1850 prisoners who are now lodged in different jails in the state.

KPCC President V M Sudheeran alleged that government move was to release prisoners convicted for heinous crimes such as rape and drug trafficking.

"It is a challenge to people and judiciary to release prisoners under political influence, especially at a time when activities of anti-social elements, mafia groups and attack on women and children are on the rise," Sudheeran said.

The remark comes close on the heels of State Governor P Sathasivam returning a file, pertaining to the release of prisoners to the government seeking some details.

The governor had sought certain clarifications in view of a supreme court judgment on the issue.

Sudheeran said the government move "can only be seen as an encouragement for criminals to engage in their activities.
