With the commencement of Jaipur Metro rail today, Congress supporters sought credit for the project as it was initiated by the former state government led by Ashok Gehlot.

The party supporters placed hoardings at places congratulating people for the Jaipur Metro while referring the project as a "gift" from Congress and distributed sweets to the passengers.

"Sweets were distributed among passengers at Chandpole metro station and people were told that it was the former government's project," Swarnim Chaturvedi, block congress president, said.

The Jaipur Metro project was started by former Ashok Gehlot government and people should know it, he added.

Congress Vice President Archana Sharma said that sweets were distributed to the passengers.

Congress workers thanked former chief minister Ashok Gehlot for the Jaipur Metro on the hoardings.

Gehlot congratulated people and said that his government took the decision to start the project due to confidence by former DMRC chief E Sreedharan.

"I do not want to criticise anyone on this historic occasion but I want that chief minister should now announce start of the second phase of Jaipur Metro from Sitapura to Ambabari," Gehlot told reporters at his residence here.

The government should explore possibilities of connecting sub-urban towns with the metro rail in the third phase, he added.
