The Opposition Congress today staged a walkout in Uttarakhand Assembly in protesting the hike in prices of wheat and rice, distributed under the public distribution system for the above poverty line category families.
The state government had increased the price of wheat, distributed to APL families under the public distribution system (PDS), from Rs 5 per kg to Rs 8.60 per kg while the PDS price of rice has been revised from Rs 9 per kg to Rs 15 per kg.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prakash Pant tried to satisfy the opposition members, saying that the prices had been revised on the basis of tide over allocation which might even be reduced in the future.
It, however, did not satisfy the members who staged a walkout from the House to register their protest.
