Referring to state agriculture minister Anand Singh's statement in the UP Assembly yesterday, that government would provide free power to farmers, Congress spokesman Dwijendra Tripathi said it was a move to "mislead" farmers and asked as to how it was possible with state reeling under shortage of power.

"The generation is much less than the demand... The government is already finding it difficult to supply power to different parts of the state and promising free power to farmers is nothing but making a mockery of the whole issue," Tripathi said in a statement.

Moreover, there are hundreds of villages where there are not even electric poles as of now and the government is making promises which it cannot keep, Tripathi said.

Replying to a question the agriculture minister had yesterday said that government would provide free power and water from government tubewells to farmers.
