A day after six dissident MLAs left Congress in Tripura and joined TMC, AICC Secretary Bhupen Bora today said the party would now be stronger and able to organise proper movements to protect the interests of people of the state.
Six MLAs led by former leader of the opposition, Sudip Roy Burman, had yesterday handed over a letter to Speaker Ramendra Debnath that they would join Trinammool Congress and leave the opposition Congress.
Bora, who came here yesterday to take stock of the situation, held a meeting with the party leaders and left the state today.
"The dissidents led by Sudip Burman were trying to destabilise the party. Earlier, they tried to join BJP but the party refused to take them and then they joined TMC. Now we are free from infighting and the party would gain more strength to work for people," he told reporters.
Bora accepted that there was infighting in Congress and said it was a "temporary setback" but now the party will be more united as infighting will stop with the exit of the dissident MLAs.
"We came to know since one year back that Sudip Roy Barman did not want to work in Congress. He wanted to lead the Congress according to his own style which is not acceptable to the party. So, I think people are more happy that Congress in Tripura is united now and there will be no infighting," he said.
Congress leaders like Gegong Apang and P A Sangma had also left Congress and joined other parties but could not continue for long, Bora said adding, the party was not dependent on any single person and hence it will be able to regain its strength before the next Assembly election.
