The Opposition Congress in Tripura today said it would stage a demonstration in front of the state police headquarters here on August 27, to protest against alleged corruption and attack on democracy during the BJP-led NDA rule.

Tripura Pradesh Congress chief Birajit Sinha alleged that corruption has thrived in the NDA government regime and attacks on democracy have intensified.

"We would organise the movement to lend support to the youth Congress' 'Bharat Bachao andolan'. All India Youth Congress president Keshav Chandra Yadav and vice-president Srinivas B V would join other party leaders in the agitation on that day," Sinha told reporters at Congress Bhavan here.

He said the rally would start from 11 am and protesters would gherao the office of the DGP with "at least 5,000 activists".

"We shall not seek any permission. The agitation will be purely non-violent," Sinha said.

He said democracy did not exist in Tripura and accused Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb of withdrawing all security guards of former MLAs after assuming office.

"There are orders from higher authorities to attack me and other party leaders whenever we go to visit different parts of the state," Sinha claimed.

Reacting to the allegations of corruption, BJP spokesperson Mrinal Kanti Deb said Congress is the "most corrupt party" in the country.

"We don't need advice on corruption from them (Congress)," Deb added.
