Notwithstanding the disastrous performance by the Congress in the just-concluded panchayat elections in West Bengal, the party today hoped that it would be able to make a turnaround in the state politically in the coming Municipal and Lok Sabha polls.

"We contested panchayat polls on our own strength this time and the party will analyse its election performance from block to district level, which will help us make a turnaround in the coming elections," WBPCC President Pradip Bhattacharya said.

He said "despite unprecedented violence and political attacks on our workers, we tried our best to field candidates in as many places in the panchayat elections."

"Starting from nomination filing to campaign and on poll days, our workers and candidates were subjected to untold suffering and attacks by the ruling Trinamool Congress," he alleged.

Bhattacharya alleged that the Trinamool Congress had entered into a secret understanding with the CPI(M) in some Congress stronghold districts, like Malda, Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas, to benefit the Marxist party.
