Rahul Gandhi, who has been elected the president of the Congress party, was accorded a grand welcome at his Tughlaq Lane residence here by the party workers this evening.

The outgoing president of the party, Sonia Gandhi, was also present inside Rahul Gandhi's 12, Tughlaq Lane residence to welcome her son after the latter's elevation to the top party post.

The workers of the party's Delhi unit gathered in large numbers outside Rahul Gandhi's residence. They welcomed the president-elect of the party with flowers amid the beating of drums.

The celebrations continued for over two hours as the party workers danced and burst crackers, besides distributing sweets among the public.

Rahul Gandhi was busy campaigning in Gujarat for the ongoing Assembly polls in that state when he was declared the new president of the Congress yesterday.

He returned to the national capital today after spearheading a vigorous campaign of his party in Gujarat.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken, leaders of the Youth Congress, National Students' Union of India (NSUI) and Mahila Congress were also there at Rahul Gandhi's residence to welcome him.
