Congress workers today protested against the start of construction work for flyover on National Highway 1, instead of an elevated bridge.

Protesters led by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee member Jarnail Nangal, first took out a march in several areas of the city and the converged at the construction site at paper chowk here.

They shouted slogans against Chief Parliamentary Secretary Som Parkash, alleging that he had backtracked from his promise that public interest would be safeguarded while constructing any bridge on NH1 here under the six-laning project.

They also burnt effigy of Parkash who is a local MLA.

Addressing protesters, Nangal alleged that the flyover would divide city into two parts, spoiling its beauty and hitting business of scores of shopkeepers.

They later presented a memorandum to SDM Balvir Raj Singh in which they opposed the flyover and demanded that elevated bridge was acceptable to local residents.

Meanwhile, Parkash, when contacted, denied all the allegations levelled against him, terming them as "politically-motivated".
