Local Congress workers in Amethi district will conduct a door-to-door survey to ascertain the extent of the crop loss suffered by farmers here in the recent unseasonal rain and hailstorm.

The decision to hold the survey -- which will continue for at least a week -- was taken at a meeting today chaired by District Congress Committee president Yogendra Mishra at the central office of the party at Gauriganj.

Mishra later said that the findings of the survey would be shared with the party high command. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is the Amethi MP.

Meanwhile, a 38-year-old farmer here died today due to shock over crop loss.

Even though Amethi tehsildar Ramkumar claimed that the farmer had died of illness, police said that the body has been sent for a post-mortem after the same was sought by the wife of the deceased.

In another case, a 15-year-old girl allegedly died after consuming poison in the Sangrampur area here, police said, adding that the reason for her to consume poison was not yet clear.

Police said that the girl took the poison at her house and was thereafter rushed to a local health centre before being referred to the district hospital, where she succumbed.
