Congress' Block president Sukhraj Singh was shot dead allegedly by Akali activists today shortly after he filed nominations for a second term at a place in Patti assembly constituency in Tarn Taran district, nearly 45 km from here.

DSP Punjab Police Jagdip Singh Sidhu said Sukhraj Singh (32) an elected Congress Block president, was fired at from point blank range by three assailants identified Sarwarn Singh, Sukha Singh and Harcharan Singh who are brothers.

Sidhu said police teams have been dispatched to apprehend the attackers.

Congress' Patti Assembly constituency incharge Harminder Singh Gill, who lost assembly elections last year to ruling SAD candidate Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, alleged it was the handiwork of Akali people.

Gill said today was the last date for the submission of nomination papers for Block Samiti elections and Sukhraj Singh was active in campaigning for Congress candidates in entire Patti constituency and that is why he was shot dead.

Gill said Sukhraj Singh was also a candidate for the Block Samiti Elections and filed his nomination papers today.

Gill said that tomorrow, PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa would come in the Patti assembly constituency along with senior Congress leadership to take stock of the situation.

Zila Parishad and block samiti elections will be held in Punjab by May 15 and gram panchayat elections on May 31.
