Condemning police apathy against a rape victim in Gwalior, who was allegedly asked to prove the sexual assault on her, Congress today demanded removal of the Gwalior SP and lodging of an FIR against the erring cops.

Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh attacked Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, accusing his government of failing to check crime against women.

"On one hand, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan feels proud to describe himself as the 'mama' or maternal uncle of girls in the state, while on the other hand, his sisters feel ashamed of themselves when the Gwalior police demands proof of rape from the victim," he said in a statement.

"The highly objectionable behaviour of the police forced the woman to commit suicide," Ajay said.

Besides removal of Gwalior SP, he also as sought registration of a case against the erring policemen.

A 32-year-woman, raped allegedly by her brother, committed suicide yesterday, with her sister alleging that she took the extreme step after police refused to lodge a complaint and demanded a proof of the offence from her.
