Congress in Maharashtra today demanded a total waiver of crop loans and grant of fresh loans for farmers in the state.
Former Maharashtra Congress chief Manikrao Thakre, addresssing a press conference here, said Maharashtra needed Rs 50,000 crore for the loan waiver and equal amount for releasing fresh crop loans.
This was needed to prevent the farmer suicides in the state, he said.

In the last four months, farmer suicides have increased. The western Vidarbha alone recorded 213 farmer suicides, he said, adding that meagre financial assistance announced by the state from time to time would not help the farmers who have faced hailstorms and untimely rains.
Talking about the law and order situation, Thakre advised Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to appoint a capable home minister, giving up the charge of the ministry.
Congress would take to the streets in Vidarbha and elsewhere for the farmers' causes, he said.
He also targeted the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for showing apathy to farmers' issues.
