Opposition Congress in Uttarakhand today staged a sit-in here to protest against what it termed as "harassment" of party workers by the ruling BJP.

"Ever since the BJP came to power in the state there is a conspiracy to remove office bearers of democratically elected institutions in which the opposition party is in majority," state Congress president Pritam Singh said addressing party workers at the protest venue.

Democratically elected bodies like co-operative institutions and zilla panchayats where the Congress is in a majority are being targeted by the ruling party, he alleged.

No confidence vote is being brought against such office bearers as part of a "conspiracy" to remove them from their posts, Singh claimed.

He also accused the BJP of implicating Congress workers in false cases as an act of vendetta.

Describing the BJP as a party which did not have faith in democratic values, Leader of Opposition in the Uttarakhand Assembly, Indira Hridayesh, said that the Congress will continue to put up a united fight against it right from the streets to the legislature.
