Congress leader Ghulam Rasool Kar dies of prolonged illness

Veteran Congress leader and member of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Ghulam Rasool Kar died after a prolonged illness here today.

He was 96.

He breathed his last at SKIMS hospital here at 3.00 am after brief illness, the family of the veteran leader said.

He is survived by his second wife, two sons and two daughters.

Hailing from Sopore town in North Kashmir, Kar became a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in 1951 and of the state Legislative Assembly in 1957.

He served as a minister in the state government from 1965-71 and 1972-75.

Kar was nominated as a member of Rajya Sabha in 1984 and elected to the Lok Sabha from North Kashmir Baramulla constituency in 1996.
 

He has also served as Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee President.

Kar will be laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Sopore at 3.00 pm today, the family said.

Senior National Conference leaders Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the death of the veteran leader.
