Congress leaders Azad, Sharma congratulate VP-elect Naidu

The Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and Congress Deputy Leader Anand Sharma today congratulated Vice-President-elect M Venkaiah Naidu and hoped to work with him constructively in the Upper House.

The vice-president is also the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament.

Sharma hoped the vice-president-elect will be non- partisan and will ensure that legitimate concerns of members are articulated and the opposition will have its space in the Upper House.

"We hope as Vice-President of India, he will be non- partisan and will rise above partisan divisions and ensure that the legitimate concerns of members are articulated and the opposition has its space which is essential in a democracy," he said.
 

Sharma also said all have known Naidu for a long time and "we look forward to working with him in giving constructive support in the functioning of the Rajya Sabha".

NDA nominee Naidu was today elected as India's next vice- president, receiving an overwhelming two-third of the votes against opposition candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
