The Congress and NPF have come together to fight the Lok Sabha polls in order to protect the rights of the Naga people, which has been put into "danger" by the BJP government at the Centre and its ally NDDP, Nagaland Congress working president Khriedi Theuno said Monday.
Addressing a joint public rally in support of Congress candidate K L Chishi, Theunuo claimed that if BJP is elected back to power at the Centre, it would "enforce its policy of one nation, one religion and one people through the uniform civil code."
The Congress leader said "we are not against the Hindu religion but we do not support the hardcore fundamentalist like RSS which is forcing such rule through the BJP government."
"They (BJP) wants to do away with the smaller states of the North East," he said while adding that "if BJP returns to power, we will be forced to entirely change our way of living."
Congress-led UPA has always stood to protect the distinct identity of the North East from the issues of Citizenship Amendment Bill and Uniform Civil Code and will continue to fight for the rights of the people even in the future, Theunuo claimed while appealing the voters to cast their franchise to elect Congress candidate.
NPF MLA Yitachu urged the electorate to support the Congress nominee and said that NPF has decided not to field candidate for the Lok Sabha polls but work with Congress on issues concerning the Naga society.
He also highlighted the Congress president Rahul Gandhis assurance made during Dimapur campaign on April 3 that whether in power or not Congress will take up Naga political issue seriously and will also pursue for restoration of special category state, revive the North East industrial policy and also to revoke APSPA from Nagaland.
