The Congress today began the exercise to choose the new chief of its Goa unit.

Senior leader Shantaram Naik recently resigned as the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee chief, saying he was inspired by party president Rahul Gandhi's appeal that seniors should make way for the young generation.

Congress sources said that AICC secretary Girish Chodankar, former chief minister Digambar Kamat, legislator Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco and the party's state general secretary Yatish Naik are among those in contention.

All India Congress Committee secretary A Chellakumar has arrived in Goa on a two-day visit to meet party legislators, leaders and workers.

Chellakumar, who held several meetings today, told reporters that the new state Congress president would be announced in the next ten days.

"The factors that would primarily be considered while choosing new president are experience, commitment to the party and ability to take on the (BJP-led) coalition government head on," he said.

When asked if Naik's successor would be from among the younger lot, Chellakumar said, "Young or old, all depends on the person's mindset. It is thinking and working that makes one young or old."

He would give a report about his meetings with party leaders in the state to Rahul Gandhi, he said.

Naik (71), a former Rajya Sabha member, resigned as the state Congress chief earlier this week, claiming that he was inspired by Rahul Gandhi's speech during the recent plenary session of the party where he appealed seniors leader to make way for the younger generation to help the party.
