The Congress today was ambivalent about CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury's proposal for moving an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India and said its leaders in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha would make the party position clear after talking to all parties.
Congress spokesperson RPN Singh said the party did not and would never want the judiciary to be politicised, but noted that the CPI(M) had raised "very important issues".
"These are very important issues that have been raised by the Left party. This is something that the Leaders of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha will talk to everybody (about)," he said.
The Congress's position would be clearly stated after talks with the other parties, he added.
CPI(M) general secretary Yechury yesterday said it was seeking to bring an impeachment motion against the CJI in the budget session of Parliament and had kick-started its efforts to rally around opposition parties.
Yechury, who met NCP leader Tariq Anwar and rebel JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav to discuss the issue, said it was time that the legislature and the executive came together to resolve the crisis as the judiciary had been unable to address the issues raised by four senior judges of the apex court.
The four judges had raised questions on the "selective" case allocation in the court and certain judicial orders at a recent press conference.
Singh said the Congress was against politicising the judiciary, especially at the highest level, and would continue to hold that position.
"We ... will never politicise the judiciary of this country. They are a very important pillar of democracy and we have not politicised it nor have we raised any issue. We again reiterate that we do not want to politicise it," Singh said.
