The ruling Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) today announced that the party would face the coming state assembly elections in 2018 under the leadership of Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla.
The MPCC Executive meeting held at the Congress Bhavan in Aizawl for the first time since 2013 assembly polls, projected Lal Thanhawla as the chief ministerial candidate.
The decision came after three years of the Congress' second consecutive term and two years before the state assembly polls.
Earlier in December 2013, just after he was sworn-in as the chief minister, Lal Thanhawla hinted in a press conference that he may be too old to continue as chief minister after the 2018 assembly polls.
