Talking to reporters here after a KPCC executive meeting, Chennithala said there were "certain lapses" on the part of the Congress while taking a decision on the fifth minister of the IUML, which was not deliberate.

"Future activities of the Front will be decided protecting the secular and democratic values always kept by the Congress, which will undertake a self-evaluation on the matter," he said.

Chennithala said he had equal responsibility along with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on the fiasco that followed the induction of IUML's fifth minister.

Clashes in Kasaragod area between Congress and IUML workers over the issue were unfortunate, Chennithala said, adding, he would take out a march from Hosangadi to Trikaripur in the district on May 10 calling for peace.

In a stern warning to former KPCC president K Muraleedharan, who had been vociferous in his attack against the IUML, he said action would be taken against anyone who disobeyed the decisions of the party.

"Congress is a party with a patient hearing to other opinions. The state of the CPI-M is such that nobody with self-respect can remain in the party," he said.

On the Neyyattinkara by-poll scheduled for June 2, Chennithala claimed UDF would repeat its resounding performance in Piravom where it won by a majority of more than 12,000 votes.

CPI(M)'s R Selvaraj who won from Neyyattinkara and resigned on differences with the party leadership, is now contesting on a Congress ticket, while the CPI-M has fielded F Lawrence, a former Kerala Congress deserter as its candidate. PTI MVG RC HKS
